Install and pair
Windows
- Run the installer. SmartScreen warns because it is not signed: More info → Run anyway.
- Read the consent screen and tick the box. Nothing is installed if you do not.
- The agent runs as a background service and the tray app starts with Windows. Pair the machine from the tray app, or run
& "$env:ProgramFiles\Proxy4U Agent\proxy-agent.exe" pair -api https://api.proxy4u.net -code <CODE>in an administrator PowerShell window.
macOS
- Right-click the
.pkgand choose Open: it is not signed by Apple, so a double-click is refused. - The consent text is the installer's licence page. Choose Agree to go on; Disagree stops the install.
- The agent runs as a launchd service and the tray app starts at login. Pair the machine:
sudo proxy-agent pair -api https://api.proxy4u.net -code <CODE>.
Linux
The script picks the right package for your machine, checks its SHA-256 against SHA256SUMS, shows the consent text and asks before it configures anything:
curl -fsSL https://proxy4u.net/dl/0.1.0-beta/install.sh | sudo shInstalling the `.deb` or `.rpm` by hand only puts the files in place; `sudo proxy-agent-setup` shows the consent text and registers the service. Then pair the device:
sudo proxy-agent-setup
sudo proxy-agent pair -api https://api.proxy4u.net -code <CODE>Docker
For a machine without a desktop. The image is not on a public registry: download the archive and load it. Pair once in a throwaway container on the volume that will hold the key (it shows the consent text first), then start the agent on the same volume.
curl -fsSL https://proxy4u.net/dl/0.1.0-beta/proxy-agent-0.1.0-beta-docker-oci.tar | docker load
docker volume create proxy-agent-data
docker run --rm -it -v proxy-agent-data:/var/lib/proxy-agent \
proxy4u/proxy-agent:0.1.0-beta pair -api https://api.proxy4u.net -code <CODE>
docker run -d --name proxy-agent --restart unless-stopped \
-v proxy-agent-data:/var/lib/proxy-agent proxy4u/proxy-agent:0.1.0-betaReplace <CODE> with the pairing code from the partner portal. Every command that configures sharing shows the consent text first.
What happens when you pair
- The app creates its own Ed25519 key pair. The private key never leaves your device; we receive only the public key.
- It connects out to our servers on port 443 with TLS 1.3 and pins our own certificate authority, so it refuses to talk to any server that is not ours.
- It opens no listening ports and runs no commands. It only connects to public websites and passes data back.
- It refuses private and local network addresses (checked after the DNS lookup) and mail ports 25, 465, 587.
Check what you downloaded
The builds are not signed, so the checksum is what proves the file is ours. Compare it with the value next to the download, or with SHA256SUMS:
certutil -hashfile proxy-agent-0.1.0-beta-windows-x64-setup.exe SHA256shasum -a 256 proxy-agent-0.1.0-beta-macos.pkgsha256sum -c SHA256SUMS --ignore-missingUninstall
- Windows
- Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Proxy4U Agent → Uninstall.
- macOS
sudo proxy-agent-uninstall.- Linux
sudo apt remove proxy-agentorsudo dnf remove proxy-agent.- Docker
docker rm -f proxy-agent, thendocker volume rm proxy-agent-data.
Uninstalling removes the service, the local group, the control directory and the device key. Then remove the device in the partner portal so it no longer appears in your list.
